Press Release – Moss Haven Elementary PTA awards 2014 Scholarships
The Moss Haven Elementary PTA has awarded $1,500 scholarships to LHHS seniors Shane Bono, Griffin Milan and Eric Speer.
Shane Bono is ranked number 9 in his graduating class of 489 students. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, mentors elementary students through the Peer Helper program, sings with the Espree Show Choir and is involved with the theater department. Shane is an Eagle Scout and achieved that rank by making improvements to our MHE Farm chicken coop. He also runs his own business entertaining and making balloon animals. He will be attending Trinity University in the fall.
Griffin Milan is the 2014 Salutatorian (that means he was ranked #2 in his class) and is a National Merit Finalist. He is Senior Class President, a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, and also sings with the Espree Show Choir. Outside of the classroom, he is a Varsity tennis team Captain, and enjoys volunteering in our community. He will be attending Rice University.
Eric Speer is ranked number 5 in the graduating class. He is Student Council Treasurer, a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, and has been a four-year recipient of the Academic Excellence Award for LHHS, to name a few of his honors. Eric is also a Captain of the Varsity tennis team, and sings in the Acapella Choir. He will be attending Vanderbilt University, majoring in mechanical engineering.
Through community donations and PTA funds, MHE established an annual scholarship six years ago for students who attended MHE for at least four years, and are graduates of RISD. An MHE scholarship committee chooses recipients based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, honors, community service, an essay, and teacher recommendations. Choosing the winners is a difficult choice every year, and this year was no exception with many strong applicants!
